, passionate educators came together to explore how AI and HTML5 tools can transform early literacy into playful, meaningful digital experiences. One of the standout creations from this session came from Kim Sze, a teacher who brilliantly translated his classroom experience into an engaging HTML5 app titled “Watch Me Spell.”
✏️ What is “Watch Me Spell”?
“Watch Me Spell” is a delightful interactive simulation designed to support early primary learners in phonics-based spelling. It guides children step by step as they hear, see, and build simple three-letter words like "map" and "hot."
The app uses:
-
🗣️ Text-to-Speech: Each instruction is read aloud using the browser’s built-in speech synthesis API, helping reinforce auditory learning.
-
🔤 Phonics breakdown: Sounds like /m/, /a/, and /p/ are explicitly modeled, linked to their letter representations, and then blended.
-
🧠 Memory and patterning: Children are encouraged to remember how the word was built before trying it themselves later.
Each step is clearly scaffolded, and the user clicks a “Next Step” button to move through the phonics journey. The simulation mimics a teacher-led guided spelling session and supports blended and independent learning.
🌟 Why It Stands Out
Kim’s work embodies the spirit of empowered teacher-creators:
-
He translated structured phonics pedagogy into code,
-
He leveraged accessible technologies (HTML5 + JavaScript),
-
And he created something that is ready-to-use and SLS-compatible!
This aligns perfectly with the goals of our EdTech Masterplan 2030: empowering educators to be co-designers of digital tools that foster deeper cognitive engagement and digital competencies in learners.

Or embed it directly in your SLS lesson for spelling drills and formative assessment!
🙌 Final Thoughts
Kim’s creation is more than a spelling tool—it’s proof that when teachers are given the right tools, time, and trust, they can co-create digital resources that are pedagogically sound, engaging, and scalable.
Let’s continue to nurture this spirit of innovation in our community of educators. If you’d like to try building your own HTML5 activity, reach out or join our next Brainsparks workshop!
