Exploring Vector Addition: An Interactive Simulation with WebEJS

Introduction:

Understanding vector addition is a fundamental concept in physics and mathematics. Vector addition involves combining two or more vectors to determine their resultant vector. This interactive simulation, created using WebEJS (Easy JavaScript Simulations), provides a visual and interactive method to explore vector addition through two primary methods: the Parallelogram Method and the Triangle (Tip-to-Tail) Method.

WebEJS Workshop Artifacts:

WebEJS is a powerful tool for creating interactive simulations that enhance learning through visualization and manipulation. The simulation showcased here is a part of the WebEJS workshop artifacts, designed to facilitate hands-on learning and experimentation in educational settings.

Simulation Overview:

The simulation consists of two panels, each illustrating a different method for vector addition:

  • Left Panel (Parallelogram Method): This panel allows users to visually add vectors by forming a parallelogram. The resultant vector (in black) is the diagonal of the parallelogram formed by the two vectors being added.

  • Right Panel (Triangle/Tip-to-Tail Method): In this method, vectors are placed tip-to-tail, and the resultant vector is drawn from the start of the first vector to the end of the last vector. This method helps users understand how vectors can be chained together to form a single resultant vector.

  1. Interactive Manipulation: Users can drag the vectors to reposition them, allowing for a dynamic exploration of how vector magnitude and direction affect the resultant vector.
